NPC's Mobile Mining and Civil School is aimed at training local Indigenous Australians for work in the mining and civil industries. It also offers an important service to established mining and civil companies by reducing their training costs and providing near work-ready plant operators and civil construction workers.
The Mobile Mining and Civil School was created as a response to significant labour and skills shortages reported all across Australia (particularly in the mining and civil works industries). In many of the regions where these shortages are the most serious, Indigenous Australians are available in significant numbers and their physical proximity to most mines makes them ideal candidates to meet these skill shortages. In Queensland alone, the projections from the resource sector indicate the industry will require a further 15,000 workers by 2015. The mining sector is the largest employer of Indigenous people and this trend will continue to grow while the resource sector is strong. The civil industry has a similar trend with increased spending from governments in this area.
NPC's Mobile Mining and Civil School is another way that the company is assisting in the economic growth and prosperity of Indigenous communities. The Mobile Mining and Civil School will benefit Indigenous communities by taking training to the communities.
The project's aim is to expand our Indigenous employment and training initiative by enabling access to a much larger population. There are clear benefits to this. The project not only facilitates business growth but also supports our primary mission, to ensure the sustainability of Indigenous communities via real employment and training options.
The NPC Mobile Mining and Civil School not only offers industry reduced training costs and near-work ready trainees, we also provide screening opportunities for industry to test the potential and skill level of people who have applied for mine work. The Mobile Mining and Civil School can also provide short refresher courses in plant operation for mining and civil employees who have spent time off-site, or whose skills need updating.
NPC works hard to place as many successful Mobile Mining and Civil School trainees as possible into positions in the mining and civil industries. Where possible, we also endeavor to place Indigenous trainees in areas near to their local communities.
