The Civil School Program is a combination of work-readiness training, simulator training and on-site experience. The program is 10 weeks in duration. It is divided into a plant operator stream using simulators and a non plant operator stream, which prepares the trainee for a variety of jobs in civil industry. Civil construction companies provide the onsite component of the training, with the aim of leading to ongoing employment if the trainee is successful.
Our most recent course was run in conjunction with contractors building the Ipswich Motorway. 16 young (and not so young) Indigenous people from the Ipswich/Goodna area of southern Queensland commenced our ten-week course in February 2010.
All passed and at this point 14 have found work, a fantastic result.
Our program can be adapted to suit different levels of abilities for trainees and as a precursor to the main program we can run a life skills program depending on the skills and needs of the trainee group.
The course is developed by and for industry, and is nationally accredited. The plant operator stream delivers a Certificate 1 and 6 units of a Certificate 2, and the non plant operators stream delivers a Certificate 1 and 7 units of a Certificate 2. The units can be tailored to meet the requirements of the host employer.
The plant operator stream involves a four day program using state of the art mobile simulators, which teach trainees how to operate civil equipment such as dump trucks, excavators and loaders, dozers, graders etc, as well as training them in relevant civil safety requirements.
